In the distant future, the war between the human race and the Gamilon has taken its toll on the planet Earth. Constant bombardment of radioactive asteroids has rendered the planet's atmosphere uninhabitable. As a means of relief aid, Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar offers the Earth Forces a device that can completely neutalize the radiation off the planet. For this task, the space battleship Yamato is launched from the remains of its World War II ancestor on a 148,000 light-year journey. However, the crew of the Yamato has only one Earth year to travel to Iscandar and back, or the human race will come to an end.

The young officers Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima receive a mysterious capsule from a ship that made an emergency landing on Mars and return with it to Earth. It contains humanity's last hope: the planet Iscandar on the other side of the Magellan Galaxy has the technology to defeat the Gamilos and restore the planet. The pilot film to Uchuu Senkan Yamato, created in August 1974 for Yomiuri Television executives. Released to the public 16 years later on the Uchuu Senkan Yamato LD Box Set. This pilot was included on later releases for DVD/BD but they lack certain sounds/audio due to a copyright issue that came about in the time between the LD and DVD/BD releases.

In 3199, 1000 years after the events from the first anime series, all the people on the Earth are faced with crisis again. When mysterious presence calling herself Yo Haguro gathers together the descendants of the original Yamato crew, the legendary battleship is restored to protect all human beings from new villain - Darqueen.

In the year 2201, one year after the Yamato saved Earth from radioactive contamination, a new threat emerges. The Yamato makes its final journey to save the Earth from this new threat. 
Earth has almost recovered from the battle against Gamilus, and reconstruction has expanded to the other planets. When former Yamato crew-mates discover a strange, garbled message that seems to be coming from a white comet headed towards Earth, they hijack their old space fortress and begin a new battle.

Created by Akira Hio nearly in the same time as the original Space Battleship Yamato, this version contains re-imagined story focusing on war with Gamilas, instead of voyage towards Iscandar.

The third and last out of three Yamato mangas published in 1974, serialized in Terebi Land and created by Yuki Hijiri. This short manga tells the alternative story of the first season of Space Battleship Yamato.

At the 50th anniversary screening attended by Hideaki Anno, Yutaka Izubuchi and Ryuusuke Hikawa, it was announced that Studio Khara was granted rights to produce a new anime movie based on Space Battleship Yamato starting in 2025. Anno revealed that his studio acquired rights for the franchise and the soundtrack and that he is now able to create a new work.
