Yayoi is the main protagonist of the Dark Gathering series. She is a young girl with a spiritual constitution who's collecting dangerous ghost in order to get enough power to rescue her mother's spirit from an evil ghost, the Spectre of Death.

She's obsessed with the occult stemming from her desire for revenge on the Spectre of Death for taking her mother's spirit. She will do almost anything to save her. That includes using any kinds of ghost, even if they are extremely evil.

Despite this obsession she has a strong moral compass. She will punish ghost that have killed many people, but she will be kind to those who unwillingly became corrupted. She knows that what she is doing is dangerous and will always put the safety of others as her top priority. She loves her friends and family dearly and has a strong desire to protect them.

After a devastating encounter with a restless spirit, ghost-fearing psychic Keitarou Gentouga became a shut-in to avoid additional spectral catastrophes. But no man is a haunted island, and Keitarou eventually reintegrates with society by getting a part-time job as a tutor to the child prodigy Yayoi Houzuki. Yayoi isn’t just an academic genius, though. She’s a talented psychic medium hell-bent on finding the malevolent spirit behind her mother’s disappearance, and she’s gravely determined to drag Keitarou into her terrifying world of grotesque supernatural phenomenon.
