Shugen is the 2nd ranked Asaemon, as well as an Assistant Instructor, in the Yamada clan. Shugen is the leader of the second team sent to Kotaku after the shogun became impatient waiting for the first team to comeback. 

Shugen is very dignified and diligent in his duties as an Asaemon. Shugen cares greatly for his Yamada clansmen, having spent his years with them and being taught what they know. He greatly expressed his concern for their safety on the island and vowed to bring them back home no matter what the means were. Furthermore, Shugen has a tendency to become emotional whenever he thinks about his comrades. He's one of the only Yamada clan members who doesn't look down on women in the clan and vouches for their qualifications as executioners. He greatly despises all criminals and truly believes that they are evil no matter who they are. At a young age, Shugen could not understand the Yamada clan's way of thinking when executing criminals and believed that they should all deserve a painful death.

Shugen believes in order of all things in the world; the order in which those who abide by the law are to be protected while those who break them should be punish without mercy.

The Edo period is nearing its end. Gabimaru, a shinobi formerly known as the strongest in Iwagakure who is now a death row convict, is told that he will be acquitted and set free if he can bring back the Elixir of Life from an island that is rumored to be the Buddhist pure land Sukhavati. In hopes of reuniting with his beloved wife, Gabimaru heads to the island along with the executioner Yamada Asaemon Sagiri. Upon arriving there, they encounter other death row convicts in search of the Elixir of Life... as well as a host of unknown creatures, eerie manmade statues, and the hermits who rule the island. Can Gabimaru find the Elixir of Life on this mysterious island and make it back home alive?
