A nobleman and a renowned mage from the Magus Association, Kayneth was a prodigy among magi, possessing exceptional magical potential and skills. He held the title of Euryphis lecturer within the Clock Tower, a notable mage academy, despite his young age. His magical lineage, going back nine generations, further enhanced his status. His magical abilities were attributed to wind and water, and he is proficient in the magical arts of summoning, alchemy, and spiritual evocation. He is also a teacher of Waver Velvet's, and was responsible for rejecting and tearing up Waver's radical thesis concerning magical potential. This act was in turn directly responsible for driving Waver to, in retaliation, enter the fourth Holy Grail War by stealing a valuable artifact from Kayneth.   Lord El-Melloi is, with regard to magical ability, arguably the most skilled Master in the Fourth Holy Grail War. He excels in magic involving mercury, which he employs to create a variety of attack and defence forms, such as barriers strong enough to resist point blank Claymore Mine blasts and flying blades capable of slicing through stone walls. Lord El-Melloi's mastery is great enough such that his enchanted mercury can react without his conscious control, automatically forming shields against surprise attacks. Kiritsugu Emiya initially regards Kayneth as one of the two most threatening magi involved in the war alongside Tokiomi Tōsaka, though neither are considered the most dangerous to be involved.   He's engaged to Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri, the daughter of the head of the spiritual evocation division, through an arranged marriage. While Kayneth is in love with her, Sola-Ui despises Kayneth, considering him a coward for not attacking opposing Masters face to face.   Kayneth is the Master of Lancer in the Fourth Holy Grail War. His participation in the War is merely a bid to increase his own prominence within the Magus Association. His initial base of operations was located at the Fuyuki Hyatt Hotel, and protected by twenty-four layers of barriers, numerous summoned monsters, various traps, and mystical spatial alterations in the lobby. With the promise of granting any wish, the omnipotent Holy Grail triggered three wars in the past, each too cruel and fierce to leave a victor. In spite of that, the wealthy Einzbern family is confident that the Fourth Holy Grail War will be different; namely, with a vessel of the Holy Grail now in their grasp. Solely for this reason, the much hated "Magus Killer" Kiritsugu Emiya is hired by the Einzberns, with marriage to their only daughter Irisviel as binding contract.
 
Kiritsugu now stands at the center of a cutthroat game of survival, facing off against six other participants, each armed with an ancient familiar, and fueled by unique desires and ideals. Accompanied by his own familiar, Saber, the notorious mercenary soon finds his greatest opponent in Kirei Kotomine, a priest who seeks salvation from the emptiness within himself in pursuit of Kiritsugu.
 
Based on the light novel written by Gen Urobuchi, Fate/Zero depicts the events of the Fourth Holy Grail War—10 years prior to Fate/stay night. Witness a battle royale in which no one is guaranteed to survive.

As the Fourth Holy Grail War rages on with no clear victor in sight, the remaining Servants and their Masters are called upon by Church supervisor Risei Kotomine, in order to band together and confront an impending threat that could unravel the Grail War and bring about the destruction of Fuyuki City. The uneasy truce soon collapses as Masters demonstrate that they will do anything in their power, no matter how despicable, to win.
 
Seeds of doubt are sown between Kiritsugu Emiya and Saber, his Servant, as their conflicting ideologies on heroism and chivalry clash. Meanwhile, an ominous bond forms between Kirei Kotomine, who still seeks to find his purpose in life, and one of the remaining Servants. As the countdown to the end of the war reaches zero, the cost of winning begins to blur the line between victory and defeat.

Ten years after facing defeat in the Fourth Holy Grail War, Waver Velvet, now Lord El Melloi II, teaches classes at the Clock Tower—the center of education for mages. However, his new status as "Lord" comes with a caveat: obey the orders of Reines, the younger sister of the deceased Kayneth El Melloi, until she is old enough to rule the House of El Melloi.

The stage: the city of Snowfield in the western U.S., far from Fuyuki. There, a "false Holy Grail War", quite unlike the original Holy Grail War, unfolds. There were those who had been keeping an eye on the auguries of the Holy Grail in Snowfield. According to an investigation by the Mage's Association, the Holy Grail War system in Snowfield was an imitation of the one in Fuyuki. What's more, the system was incomplete, leading to the exclusion of one of the seven classes and the selection of beings as Servants who ordinarily could not be summoned. It was, verily, a strange fake. As an organ of the U.S. government executes its various plots, the Servants are summoned one after another...

A letter is delivered to Lord El-Melloi II informing him of a Clock Tower reunion. One morning, as the reunion's date draws near, Lord El-Melloi II takes a look in the mirror and reels in shock. He is suddenly a full decade younger! Lord El-Melloi II has become Waver Velvet, his former self! Believing himself to be in the grip of a powerful, magically induced delusion, Lord El-Melloi II immediately begins investigating how this could have happened. On the day of the reunion, he makes his way to the gathering of his contemporaries, planning to confront whoever transformed his body and hoping to reveal their intentions. However, when Touko Aozaki arrives, things take a sudden turn...

As one of the Lords of the Clock Tower as well as the department head of the Modern Magecraft Theories department, Lord El-Melloi II holds yet another lecture for his diverse array of students. After the post-lecture meeting with other Clock Tower nobility, he throws out a few insults at the fellow Lords that are interested only in their internal power struggle, but he quickly receives a counter-curse in retaliation. On the following day, while in transit with his apprentice Gray, he notices a cat ran over by a car. It's the stray cat that frequently visited his room as of late. Lord El-Melloi II realizes that this was an attempt to take his own life, and commences a perpetrator hunt along with Gray, Flat and Svin. (Source: Crunchyroll)
