Maya lives with her mother [Chizuru](https://anilist.co/character/7834) and elder sister [Yumiko](https://anilist.co/character/7833), who are both doctors. They run a small hospital out of their house. Maya is very close friends with [Shouko Hazama](https://anilist.co/character/1618) and seems to develop a crush on [Kazuki](https://anilist.co/character/1614) over the course of the series.

Maya is an amazing mix of compassion, genuine sweetness, and steel. She has a surprising inner strength as we see in how calmly she thinks under pressure, her willingness to defy authority when she feels it is in the wrong, and her selfless courage in defending her loved ones no matter the situation. She is also extremely observant and sees much more deeply into other people's feelings than they are often willing to show.

~!Her sweet nature translates into an impressive battle persona of icy-calmness. She is the best sniper of the Fafner pilots and eventually becomes the pilot of Mark Sieben (VII) and Sieben Kain in Exodus, later nicknamed Azrael in The Beyond.!~

Tatsumiyajima is the central island in the middle of a small cluster of islands, in a sleepy backwater of the Japanese isles. Not much happens there, and the island's young people go to school knowing that their lives are likely to remain peaceful and undisturbed. Or so they have been taught... but the truth is different. The fate of mankind is on the line, and Tatsumiyajima is the last line of defense against a hostile and incomprehensible enemy. Note: The last episode aired with a runtime of ~48 minutes as opposed to the standard 24 minute long episode. In the DVD release and subsequent home video releases of the series, the final episode was split into two separate ~24 minute long episodes.

Marika Matsumoto is an actress, talent and seiyuu. From 2001-2003, she was known as "Mini Stop-chan", acting as the mascot for the Mini Stop convenience store chain commercials in Japan. She is the owner of a unique voice and has held a recital with upcoming star Satoshi Tsumabuki. Since November 12, 2005, she has been on the A&G Radio Show: Anisupa! segment Anisupa Kōnin Akujo Queen. She was also the seiyuu for Rikku in Final Fantasy X and X-2.

2150 AD. The battle against the silicon-based Festums from outer space reaches a new phase. Fragments of the North Pole Mir were scattered throughout the world. Eventually, they began to act on their own as independent Mirs. Most hated humanity and attacked them, but some chose to coexist with mankind. Some with the same way of thinking existed within the human race, as well: those who were both human and Festum. They added to the chaos of the battle and brought about even more hatred.

Yumi Ikoma and Ryou Masaoka are children who have been selected to take part in a top secret mission, to be the pilots of the first Fafner combat units; the last chance of survival for the human race. The young pilots must use all their courage and faith in order to survive and complete their mission or the fate of mankind would be compromised.
