[Kai](https://anilist.co/character/141142/Kai-Ashimoto)'s father who works at the Ebina fishery. In his youth he played in a band, fell in love with a classmate whom he later married, and moved to Tokyo with her. After their divorce, he took Kai and moved back to [his father](https://anilist.co/character/164095/Kai-no-Sofu)'s place where the three now reside together.

Kai Ashimoto, a gloomy young middle schooler, lives in Hinashi Town, a lonely fishing village, with his father and his grandfather, a parasol maker. He used to live in Tokyo, but after his parents divorced he moved back to his father's home town. Kai has trouble telling his parents the complicated feelings he has for them, and he's lonely and pessimistic about his school life. One of his joys is uploading songs he writes to the internet.

One day, his classmates Kunio and Yuuho invite him to join their band, "SEIREN". As he reluctantly follows them to Merfolk Island, their practice spot, they meet Lu, the mermaid. Lu sings merrily and dances innocently. As Kai begins to spend time with her, he starts to be able to say what it is that he's really thinking.

His favorite animals are dogs, and he has two dogs named Ivy and Momo. His favorite foods are curry and Pino ice cream. He enjoys cooking and playing video games. He can speak in the Kansai-ben dialect. He has a younger brother, Masaki, and an older sister, Shizuka. He has practiced aikido.  

He left Artvision in 2012 and has found his own talent agency INTENTION. He is part of the voice actor unit STA☆MEN, alongside Junichi Suwabe, Daisuke Kishio, Hiroki Takahashi, Hiroyuki Yoshino, Makoto Yasumura, and Kousuke Toriumi. They performed the ending theme for the Tokusatsu drama "Go Busters" of the Super Sentai Series and released it as their third single. He's also part of CONNECT, first unit of Kiramune, with Mitsuo Iwata. They released three mini-albums and a single. As a solo artist, he has released 13 singles, 3 albums and 2 mini-albums.
