Beet is a prideful young man who had been personally sponsored by [Chairman Rose](https://anilist.co/character/159781/Rose), who gave Beet his first Pokémon, later revealed to be his Hatterene, upon visiting his orphanage when he was a child. While he is competing in the Gym Challenge to become Champion, he has been gathering Wishing Stars in large quantities to help the Chairman realize his ambition. 

~!In his zealous pursuit of Wishing Stars, Beet brings harm to a historic landmark in Stow-on-Side, and he is disowned by Rose and disqualified from the Gym Challenge. Afterwards, Opal (Leader of Ballonlea's Gym) notices the sulking Beet and is struck with inspiration, asking him to become her successor. Beet reluctantly agrees, believing he will become stronger in the process. Beet eventually returns as a Fairy-type Gym Leader.!~
