One of the passengers who disappeared from Shiina's plane flight, whom she confuses with the writer of a threatening note. He helps Shiina and Akira many times, although he does not always understand where his responsibilities should stand. He is quite lecherous, having five illegitimate children and three girls pregnant during the course of the series.

Shiina Tamai, an energetic sixth-grader, found a star-shaped creature on the seabed during her visit to her grandparents' house. She befriended it and found it has some supernatural powers, such as flying and incredible strength. However, what seemed like a dream may turn out to be her worst nightmare as she meets other kids who have similar creatures and dark, destructive desires...

During her summer holiday at her grandparents house Tamai Shiina, a young and cheerful schoolgirl, meets a strange looking creature. They befriend each other and Shiina names it "Hoshimaru - The Round Star". When Shiina returns home after the summer to go back to school she starts meeting other kids that also have befriended a strange creature like Hoshimaru. But she soon finds out that not all these creatures and their masters are as friendly as Hoshimaru.
