Maurice is an orphan adopted by Eureka. She found him under a pile of corpses during the massacre at Ciudades del Cielo. Maurice is mature for his age &mdash; he's the only one who ever suspects that adults may be misstating the truth to keep the children calm, and he's the most sensitive to Eureka's moods. Maurice knows exactly what happened to his old &quot;mama&quot; though he doesn't seem to harbor any ill will toward Eureka, actually embracing the change (to an extreme at some points). Throughout the series, Maurice is the one who accepts Renton the least, despite occasional acknowledgement of Renton's achievements.

Renton is a teenager trapped working as a mechanic in a backwater town. He dreams of joining up with a daredevil group of pilots known as Gekkostate and following in his father's heroic footsteps. 
 
When a mysterious beauty named Eureka shows up asking for a tune-up, Renton soon finds himself drawn into a high-flying mecha dogfight that makes him a target of the military. When the dust settles on the spectacular battle, Renton is invited to join Gekkostate, but he soon discovers that even a dream come true has a dark side.

Renton, son of scientists, and Eureka, a girl who can't live under the sun, are raised together when very young and become very attached to each other. One day, Eureka is taken away. Powerless at the time, Renton vows to rescue her. He enters the military and is soon is assigned to the Independent Youths Unit 303 of the First Mobile Forces thanks to his exceptional performance alongside his Nirvash, a bio-mechanical armor/control system. Unknown to Renton, lies a plot to extinguish the alien invasion that is currently happening involving not only him, but Eureka too.
