Menma is a ghost girl who suddenly appears several years after her death to Jinta and asks him to reunite their group of friends so her wish can be granted. Yet, she does not seem to remember what is her wish, but she knows she has to reunite her friends in order to remember. Despite being "dead", she is a very positive, energetic and lively person. According to Jinta, she is quite selfless and cries very often for others when they are hurt or upset, but not for herself.  Jinta calls her "the beast of the summer" as he relates her to being a manifestation of his stress instead of a ghost girl.    ~!Matsuyuki admitted his love to her on the day that she died; however, she didn't return his confession in favor of chasing after Jinta. It is hinted that she has feelings for Jinta, and only Jinta is able to see her. This is confirmed when Menma wrote a letter for Jinta, which read, " _I love you, Jin-tan. It's the "I want to marry you!" type of "I love you."_"  Menma is able to reveal her presence to her friends by carrying objects, flickering the lights, etcetera. She is also able to communicate with them by writing in her diary. She seems to think that her wish was to send a rocket to Heaven with a note to Jinta's mother, so the reunited Super Peace Busters attempt to create one. Menma also wishes to be reincarnated after passing on so she can be in the world again, back with her friends. Without her, Menma's family is falling apart. Her mother is unable to move on from her death. Her father, who is hinted at being abusive, wants their family to overcome the grief. He does this by hiding all of Menma's possessions, yet it does her mother very little good. Her younger brother barely remembers her but wishes that their family could move on. He feels neglected by his mother since she is still stuck on Menma. !~

Jinta Yadomi and his group of childhood friends have become estranged after a tragic accident split them apart. Now in their high school years, a sudden surprise forces each of them to confront their guilt over what happened that day and come to terms with the ghosts of their past. <br><br>

Ai Kayano is a Japanese voice actress and vocalist currently affiliated with Office Osawa.

__Biography:__
Kayano wanted to work in a job that would involve "healing people", leading to initially take up a course at a vocational school. She worked in the beauty industry and became interested in acting after having seen [Aria](https://anilist.co/anime/477/). While attending school, Kayano continued working in the industry and paid for her tuition.

Kayano began working at Pro-Fit in 2010, voicing two supporting characters in the original video animation [Princess Resurrection](https://anilist.co/anime/9159/). In 2011, she voiced [Meiko "Menma" Honma](https://anilist.co/character/40592/) in [Anohana](https://anilist.co/anime/9989/) and received the Best Rookie Actress award for said role at the 6th Seiyuu Awards. Kayano, [Haruka Tomatsu](https://anilist.co/staff/95890/) and [Saori Hayami](https://anilist.co/staff/95869/) performed the series' ending theme "Secret Base – Kimi ga Kureta Mono (10 years after Ver.)", a cover of a song originally sung by the band Zone.

She is often praised for her vocal range, having voiced a variety of characters such as [Mayaka Ibara](https://anilist.co/character/55137/), [Mashiro Shiina](https://anilist.co/character/61371/), [Darkness](https://anilist.co/character/89363/) and [Akari Kawamoto](https://anilist.co/character/24311/) for example, none of which one would connect to the same voice actress.

Xanthe Huynh is an American voice-actress of Vietnamese descent. Huynh's path to acting began during a course in theatre acting during an elective course while in middle school. She fell in love with acting and continued on the acting path throughout high school and her passion eventually led to her graduating with a degree in Dramatic Arts at the University of Irvine in California. 

Huynh also enjoyed anime as a hobby and confided in her friends if there was any way to combine her two loves. Her friends were supportive of the idea and pushed her to try out for Anime Expo's voice acting competition called AX Idol. She would eventually make it as a finalist and was invited to audition for, and eventually signed with Bang Zoom! Entertainment and is still currently working for them since 2008, and is currently based in Los Angeles, California. 

Since signing, Huynh has gone on to voice minor and major character roles in anime and video games in major productions. Besides voice acting, Huynh also enjoys cosplaying, which is proudly displayed on her Instagram.

The TV series is retold through the different main characters' points of view with new additional material from their childhood, during the original series, and one year after the conclusion of the series.

A group of childhood friends drifts apart after one of them, Meiko "Menma" Honma, dies in an accident. Years later, the leader of the group, Jinta Yadomi, has become withdrawn and lives as a recluse.
