Born in New York. Daughter of martial artist Asato Ban, Ai is an expert of many forms of martial arts and used to be a Muay Thai champion. She used to be male but decided to change her sex after falling in love with her coach, who left for another country before Ai could express her love. Her old name is Ryuji. She fell in love with Ryotsu because he looks a lot like her former coach. She works as a traffic police in Katsushika Police Station in order to see Ryotsu often. She gets jealous easy and beats up Ryotsu when she thinks he is seeing other girls. In the manga version, she is transformed into a real woman by magic.

Ryoutsu, being an underpayed policeman, is always coming up with ways to make some quick money. But in the end, his plans which are ridiculous from the beginning always go wrong and land him in big trouble with the Buchou. 

The typical Kochikame plot involves Ryo-san coming up with a money-making scheme by inventing a new gadget or capitalizing on a fad, achieving great success, calling on Nakagawa's help as things turn sour, and finally losing it all as the fad runs out of steam or out of control. While the plots are gag-driven, much of the humor comes from the juxtaposition of mundane characters with the bizarrely incongruous (Nakagawa's wealth, Maria's appeal, everyone's lack of actual police work), most of which is never explained or rationalized in the slightest.
