Todoroki, Caswell in the English dub, is a class chairman. A very smart person, he believes that everything can be planned out and executed as planned, only to be corrected by Professor Ukyo saying that not everything goes according to plan. He has a habit of saying "to summarize" whenever he makes a final statement on a subject. 

The story takes place in the near future in a city called Heartland. Tsukumo Yuma is a young duelist who strives to become the Duel Monsters champion, despite being an amateur. One day, during a duel with a school bully, a mysterious spirit called Astral appears before Yuma, and helps him to win. Astral then explains to Yuma that he is searching for his lost memories, which have been transformed into 99 "Xyz Monster" cards called "Numbers" and have been scattered across the globe. The "Numbers" have the ability to possess the duelists who own them and bring out their darkest desires. In order to recover his memories, and collect the "Numbers" cards, Astral teams up with Yuma.

An American actor and voice actor who has worked on several animated TV series, and was the voice of SEGA mascot Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as Shadow the Hedgehog and Jet the Hawk, in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, where he is credited as Jason Griffith, before the role was passed to Roger Craig Smith.

Kotori takes Yuma to the gymnastics club at their school to cheer on her friend. There they meet the ace of the club, Kimura Taiki, who plans to quit after a recent loss at a competition. To cheer him up, Yuma challenges him to a duel.
