Near is the younger of [L's](https://anilist.co/character/71/L-Lawliet) two successors raised in Wammy's House—[Watari's](https://anilist.co/character/2179/Quillsh-Wammy) orphanage for gifted children, in Winchester, England. Of the successors, Near is the more level-headed one, able to remain calm and calculated, while the other, [Mello](https://anilist.co/character/463/Mihael-Keehl), is more emotional and quick to act. The two of them share a strong rivalry.

Near is very intelligent, although his childish appearance and demeanor can cause others to question his abilities. He has an obsession with solving complex problems and views an investigation as solving a puzzle. Despite his genius abilities, Near has low social knowledge and is bad at interacting with others. Much like L, Near shows various odd behaviors during his normal life, such as usually seen hunched over rather than sitting, and constantly playing with various toys, which he uses in his theories, as well as idly twiddling strands of his hair. He shows a great respect for L, basing much of how he solves crime on L's methods, even to the point where he only takes cases that he is interested with rather than trying to pursue justice.

Light Yagami is a genius high school student who is about to learn about life through a book of death. When a bored shinigami, a God of Death, named Ryuk drops a black notepad called a Death Note, Light receives power over life and death with the stroke of a pen. Determined to use this dark gift for the best, Light sets out to rid the world of evil… namely, the people he believes to be evil. Should anyone hold such power?

The chapter centers on Ryuk's Death Note being brought again to the human world, after the end of the main manga.  The chapter was later included in the volume “Death Note: Tanpenshuu”.

1. Genshisuru Kami (Visions of a God) 
A two hour episode of Death Note, mainly a compilation of the confrontations between Light and L, re-edited from Ryuk's perspective with new dialogue and soundtrack along with additional animation that could not be included in the original series. An Unnamed Shinigami comes to Ryuk to question him about his new story in the human world. 
2. Eru o Tsugu Mono (L's Successors) 
This story continues where the previous left off, continuing the story of Light. As the previous special told Light and L's battles, this story does the same with the conflicts between Light, Mello, and Near.
