Member of the Survey Corps and former cadet of the 104th Training Corps. Bertoldt ranked 3rd in his training class upon graduation, finishing behind only [Mikasa](https://anilist.co/character/40881) and his hometown friend [Reiner](https://anilist.co/character/46484). He is a quiet young man who identifies himself as someone with a weak will that follows popular opinion. Despite ranking 3rd in his class, his training commandant noted him to be a person with great potential, but an utter lack of initiative. Bertoldt originally he enlisted in the military with aspirations of joining the Military Police and living in the safety of the inner wall, but after the Battle of Trost he instead decided to join the Survey Corps.

Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by titans. Titans are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of titans. 
Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a titan in over 100 years. Teenage boy Eren and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a colossal titan that appears out of thin air. As the smaller titans flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Eren vows that he will murder every single titan and take revenge for all of mankind.

In this post-apocalyptic sci-fi story, humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans.
