The son of a Christian minister and president of Saitō High School's Holy Student Council. He has curly blonde hair and as the series progresses, he grows it long and keeps it in a ponytail. Though he has no spiritual powers aside of seeing ghosts, Haruto is entrusted with the seven badges of the school spirits and summons them as necessary. He hates his job and dealing with ghosts, but his attempts to resign or transfer schools are constantly sabotaged by the Chairman. His dream is to spend one day attending classes, though his fellow student council members enjoy slacking off. With the exception of Episode 6, every episode ends with him saying &quot;Oh my God!&quot;    In the manga, while Haruto still thinks he doesn't really fit in the Council in his own words, he's noticeably more mature, reliable and level-headed than his anime incarnation, and gets along somewhat better with the spirits.

Saito High is a high school with its spiritual beings and a principal whose hobby is collecting occult paraphernalia. The school has the prophecy-chosen members of the Holy Student Council to protect it. These students have problems of their own; Haruto Houjo, the president, has a way of summoning spirits, and would resign from his duty for a normal life if it weren't for the principal. Kazumi Ryodo, the next member, is good at being possessed and has something for the Hanako. The last member is Mutsuki Asahina, who is a master of exorcism and is attracted to small boys. Unfortunately, these three are in charge of keeping the school in line and defending the world from supernatural beings, and this mission brings them through wacky predicaments.

Haunted Junction centers around Saitou High School - a school where both students and spirits roam the halls - and the Student Council that tries to keep things running smoothly for all of them: Haruto Houjou, the studius son of a Christian pastor; Kazumi Ryuudou, the girl-crazy son of a Buddhist monk; and Mutsuki Asahina, the daughter of a Shinto priest with a thing for boys (that are half her age). 
Although many of the spirits occupying the halls - and depths - of Saitou are good-natured, there are many that aren't. In order to rid the school of its evil spirits and dangerous demons, the Student Council employs the help of seven distinct spirits within the school (each based on common myths and ghost stories in Japanese schools) that can be summoned by the use of seven special badges which Haruto holds.
