Ichita Naiki is the Vice President of Kiyosumi High School's student congress. In the absence of Hisa Takei, who is President, he manages the affairs of the school's governing student body. While he does not often approve of Hisa's relaxed approach to student congress work, he also supports her work in the mahjong club and organizes a public viewing of Kiyosumi's matches in the national tournament.

Miyanaga Saki is a first year high school girl whose family would get angry if she won the family mahjong games. But losing would also have its consequences. Because of this she develops a new way of playing that allows her to stay on the thin line between winning and losing, the plus/minus zero score, an almost impossible score. In a game that relies mainly on luck, the plus/minus zero score is harder than winning, but Saki can achieve this every time. Having always hated the game, her friend from middle school, Suga Kyotoro, forces her to play in the schools mahjong club. Minoru Shiraishi is a Japanese actor, voice actor, singer, songwriter and radio personality who was formerly affiliated with I'm Enterprise and Pro-Fit. He is the only "live-action" character (as he played "[himself](https://anilist.co/character/2728/)" in [Lucky☆Star](https://anilist.co/anime/1887/)) in the Newtype Anime magazine to be featured in the Monthly Top-10 Most-Popular Male Character charts. Minoru married on August 9, 2011, but has chosen to keep his wife's identity anonymous.

On December 29, 2015, Minoru revealed that he has facial paralysis, making him unable to move the right side of his face. He is currently taking medication and undergoing treatment.

Saki's never been a big fan of mahjong. A lifetime of being forced to play with family at holidays (and losing her money as a consequence...) has left a foul taste for the game in her mouth. When she's convinced, though, to play a game with her classmates, she discovers that not only has fending off her family left her with an uncanny ability for the game but, more surprisingly, that it can even be fun!
 
Is this revelation enough to cleanse Saki's distaste for the game? Can her classmates convince her to join their club, or is there just too much baggage to make it worth her while?
