Shizuku is a junior high student living in the Tokyo Suburb of Tama New Town. She loves to write, or at least has the potential for she writes the translation of the song "Country Road" from English to Japanese for graduation (she also creates her own version for Tokyo, which shows that potential as well). At the beginning of the film, it's summer and all the students are awaiting the arrival of the new school year. Shizuku is determined to read at least twenty books before that happens. Her local library does not have one that she wants to read the most, so she goes to school to find it and it's there. While she is checking it out, she notices the name "Amasawa Seiji" on the card. And she remembers that most of the other books had that same name. It turns out that it's a boy in her same grade, whom had mocked her original lyrics to "Country Road' as corny earlier. She calls him a jerk, without even knowing who it is.    ~!Later in the story, they develop a bond which then eventually turns into love. Amasawa even asks Shizuku to consent to marry him when they get older. She says yes. !~

During summer vacation, a schoolgirl named Shizuku, who longs to discover her true talents, observes an ordinary-looking cat riding by himself on the train. Intrigued, she decides to follow him. This chance encounter leads her to the mysterious Seiji, a boy who is determined to follow his dreams, and The Baron, a magical cat figurine who helps her listen to the whispers in her heart. Soon, Shizuku's exciting adventures carry her far beyond the boundaries of her imagination.<br><br>

Mimi wo Sumaseba tells the story of Tsukishima Shizuku, a junior-high school girl, as she falls in love and attempts to discover who she is and where her future will take her.

A sequel to the manga that was made into a movie, "Shiawase na Jikan" is comprised of two stories. The first is a continuation of the first book, two years into the future, and Shizuku is now preparing for her entrance exams. The second story, "Kikyou no Saku Koko" (The Blooming of the Balloon Flowers), is an unrelated original story. Tsuge Takayuki is a normal college boy, who, one day, sees a girl admiring the flowers in his front yard, and was reminded of a girl who stood by the flowers one year ago, crying in the rain. He falls in love with her, but will her injured heart accept his feelings?
