Mashiro is the female protagonist of the story. She is the resident of room 202. She is a world-famous artist who transferred into Suiko as a second-year to learn how to draw manga. Although her artwork is widely admired by the world, in spite of her young age, she knows nothing other than drawing and has an extreme lack of common sense and living ability. Due to this, Sorata is forced to handle Mashiro's living chores, to the point that he even has to pick out underwear for her, or she will go out without them.   
~!In the third novel, Mashiro starts to grow feelings for Sorata, and she even claims that she cannot live without him. In the eighth novel Sorata confesses his feelings for her and in the next novel, they are officially a couple.!~ Given her only academic strong point is art, she does very poorly in other subjects. Utilizing her photographic memory allows her to succeed in these subjects. 
~!It is heavily implied in the last volume of the novel that Mashiro and Sorata had a child.!~

__Biography:__
Kayano wanted to work in a job that would involve "healing people", leading to initially take up a course at a vocational school. While attending school, Kayano continued working in the industry and paid for her tuition.

Kayano began working at Pro-Fit in 2010, voicing two supporting characters in the original video animation [Princess Resurrection](https://anilist.co/anime/9159/). In 2011, she voiced [Meiko "Menma" Honma](https://anilist.co/character/40592/) in [Anohana](https://anilist.co/anime/9989/) and received the Best Rookie Actress award for said role at the 6th Seiyuu Awards. Kayano, [Haruka Tomatsu](https://anilist.co/staff/95890/) and [Saori Hayami](https://anilist.co/staff/95869/) performed the series' ending theme "Secret Base – Kimi ga Kureta Mono (10 years after Ver.)", a cover of a song originally sung by the band Zone.

Caitlynn French is an American voice actress known for her work on English adaptations of Japanese anime shows and films associated with Media Blasters and Sentai Filmworks. 

Kanda Sorata is a second year high school art student who was recently kicked out of the school's dorm because he was found keeping a cat in his room. Sorata begins to live in the apartment house "Sakurasou", infamous for its eccentric residents. Here, Sorata is asked to take care of one of his classmates, Shiina Mashiro. Although she is a brilliant, world-class painter, she is extremely clumsy and lacking in common sense.  And thus begins the story of the master and his pet.

After being kicked out of the main dorms for bringing in a stray cat, Kanda Sorata is forced to live in the smaller Sakura Halls where problem students are sent to live.
