The main character and narrator. Ishida bullied Nishimiya Shouko in elementary school and when she transferred away, he was ostracized and bullied by his former friends. He started to ignore those around him (imagining them with a large X across their face) and was driven to the point of suicide. He changed his mind after he apologized to Nishimiya and began to spend time with her. He learned sign language specifically so he could apologize to her and is shown to be very talented in it. He feels like he hasn't been punished enough for bullying Nishimiya and often wishes he could kill his younger self. He seems resigned to the fact that he will never be able to have friends again.

After transferring into a new school, a deaf girl, Shouko Nishimiya, is bullied by the popular Shouya Ishida. As Shouya continues to bully Shouko, the class turns its back on him. Shouko transfers and Shouya grows up as an outcast. Alone and depressed, the regretful Shouya finds Shouko to make amends.

He joined a theater troupe when he was 4 years old, and two years later made his acting debut in the historical drama Korczak. He remained with the theater troupe until March 2006, when he moved to Junction.

Made his voice acting debut in 1996 on [Taiho Shichauzo](https://anilist.co/anime/1577/). He auditioned and got the role of [Haku](https://anilist.co/character/385/) in the 2001 film [Spirited Away](https://anilist.co/anime/199/). The same year, he voiced the eponymous main character in [PaRappa The Rapper](https://anilist.co/anime/3736/), and the following year he started voicing Sora in the Kingdom Hearts video game series, a character who he still voices to this day.

He released his debut mini-album Soleil on June 26, 2009 and his first single album, Faith, on November 25, 2009. Since May 2010, he and [Hiroshi Kamiya](https://anilist.co/staff/95118/) formed a music duo called [KAmiYU](https://anilist.co/staff/116031/). Their first mini-album "link-up" was released on August 3, 2011.

The limited first edition of the Blu-ray Disc for Kyoto Animation's film adaptation of Yoshitoki Ooima's A Silent Voice manga includes two bonus new animation videos of AIKO's theme song Koi wo Shita no wa and Kensuke Ushio's in-film track Speed of Youth. 

Kyoto Animation produced the videos inspired by the songs, and the film's director Naoko Yamada personally handled the videos' storyboards and technical direction.
