Hanagata is considered one of the top centers in the Kanagawa prefecture. He mixes strength and tactical skill in his playing, being able to easily avoid defensive play. When Fujima is not on the court, he takes the role of captain, being responsible for psyching up the team. For this, he is quite a trustworthy player for Shoyo. He is known for his fade-away shot, which is difficult to block. Hanagata is the only starter shown to wear glasses, though they are knocked off his face when Sakuragi commits his fourth foul, and Hanagata plays the rest of the match without them. Hanagata holds his own in the Shohoku match against Akagi, but when he is matched up with Sakuragi, he is totally outclassed in rebounding. 

Being a top center, he is quite agile for his height. He takes on the cudgels of scoring for his team when Fujima is not on the court. He also knows how to use his teammates effectively. He and Nagano are knocked off by Sakuragi after the latter dunks on them, but despite the effort, Sakuragi still got his fifth foul. Nevertheless, he is cheered by the fans. Hanagata also missed a desperate three-point attempt against Shohoku, marking the final score, 62-60.

Hanamichi Sakuragi, an entering Shohoku high school freshman holds a record for being rejected by 50 girls during middle school. His nearly 2 meters height and bright red hair causes most students to write him off as a delinquent. 
One day, a girl named Haruko Akagi approaches Hanamichi without any fear. When she asks Hanamichi: "do you like basketball?" Hanamichi falls head over heels for the girl of his dreams. Without missing a beat, Hanamichi tells her he loves basketball, and the two head to the gymnasium where Hanamichi learns about the slam dunk. He also learns of Rukawa, one of the country&rsquo;s top basketball prospects, also a freshman at Shohoku.

Mario Castañeda is a Mexican voice actor and dubbing director. When he was very young, his parents moved to Mexico City where he resides currently. He studied drama in the Andrés Soler Institute from 1979 to 1982, and in June 1983, Castañeda started to work as a voice actor in Mexican dubs of several television series including Diff'rent Strokes, The Powers of Matthew Star, and Visitors. Castañeda has also done voice work in Japanese anime as well as the dubbing voice of many actors in movies, including Jim Carrey, Jackie Chan and Bruce Willis.

In 2004, Inoue produced an epilogue titled Slam Dunk: 10 Days After, which was drawn on 23 chalkboards in the former campus of the defunct Misaki High School located in the Kanagawa Prefecture, and was held for public exhibition for three days between December 3 and 5. The epilogue, along with coverage of the event, was reprinted in the February 2005 issue of Switch magazine.
