A former student of Class 76th at Hope's Peak Academy. He is a member of the Future Foundation as the Branch Office 9 Director, responsible for the preparation, development, and management of armaments/weapons. He, along with the other directors, is forced to participate in the Final Killing Game.

Sonosuke is stated to be a "silent type" who avoids talking to others, the only exception being his romantic partner, Ruruka. Sonosuke is incredibly loyal and protective of her, drawing a weapon on anyone who gets close to her. He loves Ruruka's candy and she seems to feed him as a reward, him often resting his head on her lap as he eats and calling the sweets "dewicious". Once Sonosuke's trust is broken, it is very difficult to gain it back, as he believes "once a traitor, always a traitor".

As the Ultimate Blacksmith, Sonosuke is skilled at developing and using different weapons, and he stocks all kinds of hidden weapons inside his coat. His parents, who were also blacksmiths, taught him from a very young age. At the Academy, he opened his own shop to take requests from people to forge any weapons they requested. He created weapons for two purposes, practical and collection. He takes a special interest in weapons that would typically used by ninja. He is also shown to be able to create many kinds of traps, including explosives that can be triggered with a switch or pressure activated traps.

Chisa Yukizome begins her job as homeroom teacher for Hope's Peak Academy's 77th Class of Ultmate students. Meanwhile, Hajime Hinata, a student of the school's Reserve Course for students without talent, prepares to undergo an experiment to make him the Ultimate Hope. What follows is a series of tragic events which lead to the birth of the Remnants of Despair and the realization of "The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History."

Makoto Naegi, the Ultimate Hope who defeated the Ultimate Despair, Junko Enoshima, is under suspicion of treason against the Future Foundation for harboring the Remnants of Despair who carried on her will. As top members of the Future Foundation, including Makoto's former classmates Kyoko Kirigiri, Aoi Asahina, and Yasuhiro Hagakure, are brought together to decide on Makoto's punishment, they are all imprisoned by Monokuma, who forces everyone to participate in a final killing game. They must try to find the traitor among them who will kill them in their sleep, while also trying to avoid being mortally poisoned by personalised forbidden actions. Thrust into a game where no one can trust each other, Makoto's ideals of hope are pushed to their very limits.

Nagito Komaeda wakes up after experiencing death in the Neo World Program. What kind of world is he seeing and why did he wake up? 

Nagito appears to be in a strange world, including students who have been seen before as well as people who never existed. He is an ordinary boy with no Ultimate Luck, attending an ordinary school. Constrained by being the protagonist, he thinks that having a big talent would interrupt his happiness. He believes that living an ordinary life, being moderately happy, while watching his classmates have a normal youth is what's wonderful. 

However, one day, a boy calling himself "The Destroyer of the World" appears, having the form of red-eyed Hajime Hinata. He begins the destruction of Nagito's world...

In response to The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History, an organization called Future Foundation was created to combat the chaos still present even after the death of The Mastermind. Misaki Asano is a new recruit, working as a special investigator for the 6th Division's Special Case Bureau—a branch dedicated to only the most bizarre and challenging murder cases. Alongside her partner, Takumi Hijirihara, they aim to combat despair one case at a time. 
 
Though, perhaps their most challenging case is that of the mysterious Killer Killer, a bizarre serial killer who chooses to target other murderers.
