Jean Robert Lap is a talented lieutenant commander for the Free Planets Alliance. He is both a former schoolmate and old friend of Yang Wen-Li, and the fiancée of Jessica Edwards. He served as an operations staff officer in the 6th fleet of the Battle of Astate.   ~! Lap died, along with the 6th fleet, in the Battle of Astate. He had insisted upon retreat as defeat was inevitable. But his superior, Commander Moore, refused, suggesting that retreat was cowardly.   Lap's death inspired the political activism of Jessica Edwards. Yang also felt some measure of responsibility; if he had been more assertive, many lives (including Lap's) may have been saved.  Lap was posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain. !~

For decades, the Galactic Empire has been locked in an interstellar war with the Free Planets Alliance, a conflict that involves thousands of spaceships and millions of soldiers on both sides. Two new commanders enter the conflict with great hopes: Imperial Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm and the FPA's Yang Wen-Li. As they deal with superiors and subordinates, maneuver through complicated political arrangements, plot strategies, and win battles, each will be tested, and ultimately, changed, by the reality of war.

Led by Reinhard von Müsel, the Galactic Empire crushes the Free Planets Alliance in the Fourth Battle of Tiamat. Arriving in the Imperial capital of Odin to a hero's welcome, Reinhard's victory earns him a promotion to High Admiral and the distinguished title of Count von Lohengramm. On the other side, Yang Wen-li safely returns to the Alliance capital of Heinessen without fanfare and reunites with his dear friends. 
 
Reinhard and Yang look forward to a long-awaited reprieve. However, at the request of the scheming Duke Otho von Braunschweig, the Imperial High Command orders the new High Admiral to invade the Alliance with a fleet of twenty thousand ships. After the Duke leaks the plan to the Alliance government, three fleets totalling forty thousand ships are sent to counter the incoming attack and recreate the famous Battle of Dagon. But even though Reinhard is outnumbered two to one, he has an ingenious plan—and Yang sees right through it. Will Yang's superiors heed his warning before it is too late?
