Durandal is a man of science and medicine rather than politics, with the stated agenda of ending all conflicts between humans, especially the chasm between the Naturals and the Coordinators, i.e. the Earth and PLANT. While a supporting character to the protagonists of the PLANT/ZAFT side of the story, he serves as the principal antagonist in the series, especially to the protagonists of the original Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.  Before he was Chairman of PLANT, Durandal was a brilliant young physician specializing in genetics and advanced biomedical techniques.  He also was a friend of Rau Le Creuset, who was also his patient, as it appears that it was he who prescribed Le Creuset the pills to stop the pain from his genetic malfunctions. However, despite Gilbert's efforts to ameliorate his friend's suffering, he could do nothing to "save" Rau from his genetic death sentence. Rau's inability to understand the purpose of his existence helped Durandal form his opinions about a perfect world society.  Durandal also had a relationship with later Minerva Captain Talia Gladys but she left him because she wanted a child. C.E. 73: While the second battle of Yachin Due brought the war between the Naturals and Coordinators to a close, tensions between the two races are at an all-time high. During a meeting between PLANT Chairman Gilbert Dullindal and Orb Representative Cagalli Yula Athha, a unit of soldiers hijack ZAFT's newly developed Gundams. ZAFT soldier Shinn Asuka along with his friends at the ZAFT ship Minerva sortie in attempt to deter this hijacking. With the assistance of Cagalli's bodyguard, Athrun Zala, the Minerva chases after the unknown ship that hijacked the Gundams until an even greater problem occurs leading to the start of the second Bloody Valentine war.
 
Note: On March 2013, the airing of the HD Remaster began. Like the HD Remaster of Gundam SEED, the remaster of this series not only improves the animation, but also alters lines and scenes from the original, as well as introducing brand new mobile suits. The episode count for the remaster was 50 episodes. The recap episode "Refrain" was completely omitted from the HD Remaster, while the final episode divided into two parts: "Final Power" and "The Chosen Future", based on the "The Chosen Future" television special, with additional footage.

A new Gundam SEED Movie announced as part of the project "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED PROJECT Ignited" in celebration of Gundam SEED's upcoming 20th anniversary in 2022.
 
It is now Cosmic Era (C.E.) 75, two years after the dismantlement of the Destiny Plan, but warfare still continues to rage on between Naturals and Coordinators.
Independence movements are now sprouting up across Earth, and invasions by Blue Cosmos grow exponentially stronger...
To deal with these predicaments, a World Peace Supervision Organization known as COMPASS has been established, with PLANT Chairwoman Lacus Clyne as the founding leader.
Kira Yamato and the others, as its new members, intervene into various battles for the sake of this peace.
However, as these battles take place, an emergent nation known as 'FOUNDATION' appears, and they propose a joint operation to attack the Blue Cosmos Headquarters.

Keith David Silverstein is an American voice actor, best known for his roles as Johan Liebert in Monster, Vector the Crocodile in the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, Robert E.O. Speedwagon in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Hisoka in the 2011 version of Hunter × Hunter, Oogai Mori in Bungo Stray Dogs. He is also known from several non-anime roles, including Gabriel Agreste a.k.a. Hawk Moth (Shadow Moth in later seasons) in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, and Zhongli in Genshin Impact.

In C.E. 73, tensions between Naturals and Coordinators continue to persist, eventually leading to another war between the Earth Alliance and PLANT. Sven Cal Bayan is a Natural pilot of the elite EA squad, the Phantom Pain, and carries out his squad's various anti-Coordinator missions without fail. Selene McGriff is a Coordinator researcher at the neutral Deep Space Survey and Development Organization (DSSD) and a developer of the GSX-401FW Stargazer space exploration mobile suit. Though their backgrounds are completely different, the expanding war will nevertheless force their paths to collide.
