A Karasu-Tengu. Lost most of his abilities, such as flight, after a certain incident. He now lives as an old man. He seems to be infatuated with Benten, and taught her how to fly, although the feelings aren't mutual.

Kagome&#039;s grandfather. He is often covering for Kagome&#039;s absences at school with interesting excuses, which make Kagome&#039;s friends worry a lot about her.    Grandpa is identified by his clothing as a traditional Japanese Shinto Priest, apparently the current custodian/guardian/caretaker/owner of the Higurashi Shrine which has been in the family for generations. He continually tries to inject some education of the history of the family shrine into everyday life - even to the point of discussing the &quot;history of these pickles&quot; much to Kagome&#039;s dismay.

Master of the ancient jujutsu arts used by the samurai soldier-warriors of feudal Japan. Is sixty years of age, and has trained since prior to World War II, in the &quot;old days&quot; of the martial arts. His art makes use of the martial arts principle of aiki, which uses the opponents&#039; attacks against him. Manages to make it all the way through to semi-finals in the Maximum Tournament series and battles against Jack Hanma. In his third match with Doppo, Goki is shown to act in an insane manner while fighting. He also states that he&#039;s killed many people. He later teams up with Baki to face the Japanese convict Yanagi Ryukou in the &#039;Search of Our Strongest Hero&#039; series. He also has a friendly sparring match with Biscuit Oliva and another match with Mohammad Ali Jr. In the Maximum Tournament, he faces Roger Harlon in round 1, and Shinogi Koushou in round 2 before facing Doppo in round 3 and losing to Jack Hammer in round 4. When not fighting, he&#039;s quite eccentric (as well as a bit senile) as he lives the day and fears nothing. Although in the series Goki is said to be a master of the old style of jujutsu, and when he fights Doppo it is said that he represents Jujitsu, most Goki&#039;s techniques looks like Aikido, and even Goki himself resembles the Aikido Master Gozo Shioda, founder of the Yoshinkan Aikido. Dr. Nako (often simply called "Doctor") is a doctor from Cocoyashi Village. Although a relatively minor character overall, he was one of the major characters from Nami's childhood.  He plays a major role in the flashback, while he plays a minor role in the present. He aids the crowd in fighting the Arlong Pirates and later tends the wounds of Zoro, Luffy, Yosaku, and Johnny. Nako grumbled about the crew having no doctor which gave Luffy an idea to find a doctor of their own. He then put the pinwheel tattoo on Nami's left arm to cover her stab scars.  He wears a bandana with a red cross, a common symbol for medical personnel, (which is edited out in the English anime) and a sunglasses.


Occulus is the founder of the post-death arbitration system. He spends most of his time playing billiards, especially with Nona, whose presence he appreciates for discussion. Oculus is strictly opposed to the idea that referees can have human feelings because he says "humans cannot judge humans."

The lotus flower under his chin can be enlarged, allowing him to see through the memories of the people he "absorbs" with.

An elderly blacksmith and a friend of Inu-no-Taishou (InuYasha and Sesshoumaru's father) who forged the Tessaiga and the Tenseiga. He rarely appears unless to repair the damaged swords or instruct InuYasha in hidden powers within the Tessaiga. Tōtōsai can breathe fire and wields a giant forging hammer. He also is transported by a three eyed ox which can fly. ("Totosai" means "sword purification.")

Seiji's grandfather. He owns a small private antique store and restoration shop. He is a kind and gentle old man with a great deal of life wisdom that he shares with the people around him.

Easily recognizable by his huge, bristly mustache, Shunsaku Ban, also affectionately known as “Higeoyaji” and/or “Mustachio”, is one of Tezuka’s longest-running characters.  Most often cast in the role of a spirited, if not particularly sophisticated, middle-aged man, he has appeared in many of Tezuka’s most important series, including (but not limited to): Lost World (1948), Metropolis (1949), Next World (1951), Astro Boy (1952-68), The Adventure of Rock (1952-54), Lion Books (1956-57), Black Jack (1973-83), The Three-Eyed One (1974-78), MW (1976-78), Rainbow Parakeet (1981-82), among many others. Short-tempered and rough, he is also warm-hearted with a burning sense of justice – perfect for his usual occupation as a plucky detective.

It is interesting to note that, even though Shunsaku Ban appears in so many of Tezuka’s series, he didn’t really create him.  As Tezuka confesses in his book I am a Manga Artist, Higeoyagi’s character design is in fact based on a doodle that a good friend of Tezuka’s drew of his own father, when both were in middle school.  Tezuka swiped it and used it in Old Man Detective, one of his early amateur works, and he soon became an indispensable part of Tezuka’s work.

Don’t miss a rare appearance by Shunsaku Ban as a young man, with jet-black hair and sans his famous mustache, in the Lion Books (1956-57) chapter entitled “The Green Cat” (1956).
