The main character of the story. Kaiji is poor, downtrodden and lazy - he lives by himself in a slum and is constantly in debt. He bides his time by playing cheap gambling games with neighbors, though he always loses. In spite of this, when his life is in danger, he displays a remarkable hidden capacity for gambling, which allows him to endure the hardships he faces. He is shouldered with a 3,850,000 yen debt at the beginning of the story by a coworker who convinced him into consigning a loan, leaving Kaiji with the full weight of the debt compounded over a year. Though he started off as somewhat of a naive man, he quickly develops into a clever and thoughtful gambler after his first experience on the Espoir.

With an unbreakable will, Watashi continuously strives to raise Kaatan, his kappa, as well as he possibly can. Though always faced with difficulties, he's never disheartened.

Don't worry about his face! In fact it's nothing unusual; in this anime, all of the human characters have a stark lack of facial features.

Watashi is studious and spends a great time studying the "How to Raise a Kappa" series of books. From them he gleans kappa know-how and applies it to his every-day activities with Kaatan.

We learn later that Watashi grew up with a kappa in the countryside, which may explain his undying love for kappa in general!

Takuya is Hiroki's best friend. With him, he built a plane to go to Hokkaido Island to see the tower that is there.

Toua is a successful gambler, and a pitcher in the game One Outs. After losing a game of One Outs for the first time , he joins the Lycaons with an odd contract, the One Outs contract, that decides Toua's pay based on his performance. As the Lycaons' famed star pitcher, he can pitch entire games without giving up a single hit.

Akagi is introduced as a deceptively adult looking young boy, whose spark of genius transcends age and resides in gambling, especially in the game mahjong.  After gaining mythical status at 13, he disappears for 5 years and resurfaces to become a legendary figure in the whole of Japan.    ~! Akagi is really determined. He doesn't value material goods, and to an extent, his own life, but he does value himself and what he can do. As such, he throws everything he's got into anything he does. There is no halfway for Akagi. Playing against him is basically war, and he's willing to do anything to win. He believes in himself.  In a one-on-one situation, Akagi is aiming to completely break his opponent psychologically. He's incredibly insightful and observant (like figuring out someone's personality and subconscious issues by how they play mahjong , and adapts how he plays to specifically get where it hurts most. He'll call ridiculous bluffs, pretend he's losing, sacrifice his own win status, and otherwise lay on the pressure to get the other guy to crack.  Akagi's got an impressive grasp on human psychology. He's also a meticulous planner when it comes down to it. He utilizes techniques other gamblers don't dare to, in order to sway his opponents: brazen cheating, extremely risky maneuvers, far fetched bluffs, a blatant disregard for his own life. These actions make him a heretic among "ordinary" men, yet allow him to unflinchingly defeat his opponents with a level of play that is marked as godly. His irrationality is probably his biggest strength as a gambler.  Akagi is currently seeking out a battle where he can bet his own utter destruction and he wants to keep on going until either him or the opponent is completely, utterly broken. !~

~! In his older age, Akagi generally has moved on from his goal of finding a death match, only referencing those kinds of insane gambles during the end of the story, when asking Hiro to bet his arm. Through this however, Akagi's views on life have stayed consistent, and much of the story is motivated by his desire to live, as well as die, as himself. Otherwise, Akagi seems to live a casual life, continuing to move around at his own whims, doing things like playing golf in Hawaii seemingly on a whim. While Akagi was well known for appearing and disappearing at random, spending his younger days friendless, he becomes friends with the characters in Ten, something that he decides makes up for his lack of a family. !~
