Kanae is Hotaru's best friend​ and was first aware of her being a girl. Kanae has a very feminine and lively persona. Although her actions and words can be perceived as immature and spontaneous, she genuinely cares about the well-being of others and is very encouraging.

When Hotaru Tachibana storms into a host club to avenge the honor of a wronged female student, the last thing Hotaru expects is to duel the club’s most popular host with airsoft guns instead of fists. When Masamune Matsuoka’s experience wins out over Tachibana’s brawn, he realizes that he can use his victory (and the large bill for damaging the club) to make Tachibana join his struggling Survival Gaming team. She is a voice actress and singer currently affiliated with vims. She hosts a radio show called "Horie Yui no Tenshi no Tamago" (堀江由衣の天使のたまご "Yui Horie's Angel Eggs") and is the founding member of the singing group, Aice5. She is also a member of the band Kurobara Hozonkai, with the name YUIEL. Her hobbies include shoulder massaging, reading and eating. She has been affectionately nicknamed "Hocchan" (ほっちゃん) by her Japanese fans.

Hotaru Tachibana is a girl (though all too frequently mistaken for a boy!) with a deep sense of justice. When a classmate informs Hotaru that she was bilked out of her cash by a shady host at a host club, Hotaru immediately rushes to confront the villain only to discover that the con man in question is her new neighbor! Worse, he proposes to settle their feud with firearms! Okay, it turns out that they're just toys, but when Hotaru is soundly defeated, she finds herself sucked into the world of survival games.
