Alex Caselnes is a vice admiral serving in the Free Planets Alliance. A genius at logistics, he is a military bureaucrat expertising in supply and rear-line support. Uncompromising and possessed with a sharp tongue, he is hated by many of his more authoritative superiors, but at the same time easy going and caring, he has earned the respect of his subordinates. He is one of Yang&#039;s oldest and closest friends, they met while he was the chief secretary of Yang&#039;s military school and came to Yang&#039;s aid numerous times.   Alex is married with Hortence Milbear and has two young daughters, his family is a very happy one and he is often used by his friends as an example for the ideal family man. He often encourages the melancholic and romantically incompetent Yang to marry and find the happiness that eludes him, in love and family. He is also the one who entrusted Julian Minci in Yang&#039;s care.

For decades, the Galactic Empire has been locked in an interstellar war with the Free Planets Alliance, a conflict that involves thousands of spaceships and millions of soldiers on both sides. Two new commanders enter the conflict with great hopes: Imperial Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm and the FPA's Yang Wen-Li. As they deal with superiors and subordinates, maneuver through complicated political arrangements, plot strategies, and win battles, each will be tested, and ultimately, changed, by the reality of war.

The Free Planets Alliance's invasion of the Galactic Empire has failed after supply mismanagement led to heavy losses. Unwilling to abort the expedition despite being greatly outnumbered, Fleet Admiral Lazar Lobos orders the remaining Alliance fleets to gather in the Amritsar Starzone for a final stand against the incoming counterattack. 
 
Strategic genius Fleet Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm leads the Imperial forces into this decisive battle with an overwhelming advantage. However, his rival, tactical magician Vice Admiral Yang Wen-li of the Alliance, once again makes up for the incompetence of his superiors and stages a narrow escape for himself and his fellow soldiers. Led by Reinhard von Müsel, the Galactic Empire crushes the Free Planets Alliance in the Fourth Battle of Tiamat. After the Duke leaks the plan to the Alliance government, three fleets totalling forty thousand ships are sent to counter the incoming attack and recreate the famous Battle of Dagon.
